An Easy Way to Help You Hear Better

A group of four people engaged in a discussion, seated around a table in a modern office with large windows. The table holds documents featuring colorful charts and graphs, along with a tablet displaying the text "FIFTH AVENUE." The scene highlights teamwork and professional collaboration.

There is one common thread among everybody who wears hearing aids, and that is the desire to hear better. Unlike with eyeglasses, where most people can get corrective lenses that get them back to 20-20 eyesight, it is not possible to correct your hearing,g so it is like it was when you were in your 20s.

The audiology industry regularly promotes the fact that it takes an average of seven years from the time an individual identifies their hearing as declining until they get hearing aids. Also, it is particularly interesting to note that only about 20% of the people who would benefit from wearing hearing aids get them.

For those people who do get hearing aids, the first reaction of most people is WOW. I did not realize how much the hearing aids improved how well I heard. After some time wearing their new hearing aids, many of the patients start to realize that they don’t hear as well as they should when involved in noisy situations such as parties or the dinner table with a group of friends.

Others find it difficult to clearly hear a speaker when attending a class or a lecture. Still, other people find they do not hear as well as they would like when walking around the town with a friend or family member.

The good news is that there are excellent solutions to all these situations. Basically, the solutions fall into three classifications, as follows:

First Step – Visit Your Audiologist for a Hearing Aid Adjustment

The first thing most people will do is visit their audiologist to see if it is possible to tweak the prescription to help the patient hear better. Often, this will help a little, but it probably will not fix the problem completely. As a result, hearing aid wearers will look for another alternative to help them hear better.

Fifth Avenue Hearing connects you to an expert audiologist in New York.

Second Step – Consider New Hearing Aids or Upgraded Technology

If the tweaking of the existing aids does not solve their problem, patients will explore the option of purchasing a new pair of hearing aids. This is particularly common at the present time when the major manufacturers are touting the amazing effect that artificial intelligence (AI) has on your ability to hear better.

The reality is that almost everyone will hear significantly better if they purchase new hearing aids that have incorporated artificial intelligence into their chip.

A related action that some people take to improve their situation is to move to a higher level of technology in their existing brand or a different alternative. All major hearing aid manufacturers offer 3–4 different levels of technology, and as would be expected, the higher the technology, the more capabilities of the devices, and the higher the price of the hearing aids will be.

While it is very clear that the new AI hearing aids represent a major improvement vs. the older versions, most patients will find that they still have difficulty hearing as well as they would like. This brings us back to the desire to hear like you did when you were 26.

Third Step – Hearing Aid Accessories Can Help You Hear Even Better

The very good news is that there is still another alternative approach that patients can take that will significantly improve their ability to hear better, even with the latest and greatest AI-generated hearing aids. This solution is focused on the variety of hearing aid accessories that are now available.

Some patients question why they should have to purchase an accessory when they have just bought the best and most expensive device on the market. This is understandable, but the answer goes back again to the inability to correct hearing to where it was when you were in your 20s.

Below are some instances when you might benefit from hearing aid accessories or assistive listening devices:

“I Need to Use Closed Captions with the Television”

Also, when I turn the sound louder, I create conflict with the other family members who find the sound too loud. The solution to this problem is a device called a TV Streamer affectionately known as the “marriage saver.” With a TV Streamer, the sound from the television connects directly to your hearing aids so that you will hear much clearly. Further, the sound in the room can be turned to a comfortable level for others, or even muted if that is their preference. The TV Streamer is very easy to connect to your television and to pair with your hearing aids.

“I Can’t Follow Conversations at the Dinner Table”

This is one of the most common complaints that hearing aid users express and is also a very easy problem to correct. Every manufacturer of hearing aids makes a Table Mic, which is a small device you place in the middle of the table, thus enabling you to hear the others in your group. There are many variations of table mics, from relatively inexpensive ones to others that have many different capabilities. It is best to talk to your audiologist regarding which of them would be best for your needs.

“I Can’t Hear Clearly in Class or Lectures”

The very simple solution to this situation is the Remote Mike, which is a device that can be placed on the lectern or worn by the speaker. The device then collects the sound from the speaker, and it goes directly into your hearing aids so you can easily hear the speaker. This device requires no installation—simply pairing it to your hearing aids will make it operational immediately.
